Rapid evolutions lead to unpredictability
As part of Cisco Live week, the Telstra and Cisco Alliance team hosted an event focused on how to create a hybrid cloud strategy. Rodd Jefferson, General Manager for Hybrid Platforms NSW / ACT at Telstra said that because technology evolves so rapidly, knowing what might be available in the future is something the average business owner can’t predict with confidence.
To dig deeper into the topic of creating a hybrid cloud strategy in today’s environment, our customers at the event were invited to share their own personal experiences of issues they faced.
Addressing real issues that surround hybrid cloud
In an unpredictable and rapidly evolving environment, it pays to get back to basics and understanding that hybrid cloud starts with some very simple questions:
- What have I got?
- Where do I put it?
- How do I work out how much it costs?
- How do I continue to sync what I already have within the hybrid cloud?
According to Cisco’s Joe Onisick, tackling the first question is a critical first step to achieving hybrid cloud integration success in any business.
Start with the basics - know what you’ve got
There is a very clear reason why clients need to have a better understanding of the applications they have. On this point, Onisick is clear: “The ability to know what we have now is key to making intelligent decisions about what to do in the future,” he says.
Without the knowledge of the capabilities of your system, making strategic decisions about what investment you need to make in relations to security measures and other aspects of IT operations, is more complicated - and potentially costly.
Optimising workloads in the cloud
From the perspective of both Onisick and Jeremy Foster, Director Global Sales, Unified Computing Systems – Cisco, enhancements to workload optimisation are pivotal to the sustainable success of any smart business.
With an increasing number of workloads that should run in the cloud, there is still plenty of scope for most Australian businesses to be bolder about combining the best aspects of ‘old ways’ with the improved security and efficiency of the ‘new ways’ that technology continues to unlock.
Moving workloads to the cloud environment may not always seem straightforward but, with the right support and guidance, it can be transformational and something that can be easily handled by experts who have a genuinely in-depth understanding of your business needs.
Selling simple solutions that solve just one problem is the sales technique of the past, says Telstra’s Rodd Jefferson.
“We need to focus more on delivering holistic solutions,” he says.
As the specialists from Cisco reiterated, the new digital age is turning traditional business models on their heads, with many IT environments struggling to match the pace of change in the modern enterprise.
To counter that - and stay ahead of their competitors - IT departments must adapt to constantly changing applications, user expectations and data locations by selecting and implementing the best data centre and hybrid cloud strategies. Saying that sustainable digital success depends on it is not about fear-mongering, but simply fact.
