The Internet of Things is paving the way for transformational change in the mining industry, shifting the way mining operations are conducted and helping to drive efficiencies.

Wireless technologies in mining: Enabling transformational change

Mines and mining operations are more network-reliant than ever, as they strive for a seamless supply chain from pit-to-port. Traditionally however, mining supply chains have been made up of independent silos and point solutions. However with the global mining downturn, the industry has sharpened its focus on increasing production and efficiency, and this has driven the need for a real-time view of the supply chain. Maintaining reliable connectivity along the route offers real operational benefits and efficiencies.

Mining companies need to upgrade their communications networks and operating models so they can collect, integrate and share critical data across the whole organisation. This is driving the integration of operational technology and information technology.

The OT-IT integration will integrate the previously fragmented view that resources companies typically have of their supply chains and provide greater operational visibility for managing critical assets, logistics and planning.

With the right approach to analytics, quality data will mean better decision-making and improved operational efficiencies.

Today’s mining operations are rapidly adopting Internet of things, or IoT, technology to automate processes, improve safety and reduce operating costs .
