Create transformative innovation

Leadership starts, and ends, with community

As we leap into a new age of digital connectivity and technological innovation, adaptability and the power to manage change effectively are fast becoming the hallmarks of a successful leader.

Winning people over to new ideas, and convincing people to go through change are essential leadership skills, says Jennifer Fleming, CEO at the Victorian branch of Girl Guides Australia. “It’s about trying to get people to follow you into a new place, often a place they don’t want to go,” she says.

Change management is one of the key precepts of tomorrow’s leaders – a skill that Girl Guides is teaching girls from a young age, Fleming adds. “Girl Guides is one of those organisations that’s building kids’ character and their sense of community, particularly in the digital age.”

It’s about convincing people to go through change. It’s about trying to get people to follow you into a new place, often a place they don’t want to go.

Girl Guides has always been about the community – being part of a community that’s bigger than you are.

We’re asking girls to take on small leadership roles and to participate in a sense of self-governance.

It’s a little bit of public speaking, and a little bit of confidence building.

It speaks of not just the girls involved but also the women involved and the opportunity to develop their own leadership skills.

You’re convincing people to go through change by winning people over to your idea.

You’re trying to get people to follow you into a new place, and often it can be a place they don’t want to go.

Connecting the stories that are in the community to their history at Girl Guides – that’s the whole point of being part of something bigger than you are.

For me, Girl Guides is one of those organisations that’s building kids’ character and their sense of community, particularly in the digital age.
